A New Green Fireplace Concept: Burn Wood and Reduce Emissions
Earth’s Flame™ hybrid fireplace retrofit reduces wood burning emissions up to 72%
CORONA, California—April 21, 2010—Earth’s Flame™ introduces a hybrid fireplace retrofit for wood-burning fireplaces that may prevent the extinction of the traditional American-family fireplace. Innovative and effective, the fireplace retrofit won the 2010 VESTA Green Award at the Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Expo. More importantly for consumers—Earth’s Flame™ reduces emissions 35% below the Phase 2 Emissions Level of the EPA’s Voluntary Wood-Burning Fireplace Program as tested in a typical 36” zero clearance fireplace. Official burn tests compliant with ASTM E-2558 show an average emission factor of 3.3 g/kg; this is up to a 74% reduction in standard fireplace emissions.
Lisa Leighton, Owner of Canterbury Enterprises states, “Earth’s Flame™ offers a simple solution because it easily retrofits into most of the existing fireplaces and allows home owners to once again enjoy their fireplace. We extol the “Green” nature of the product because it improves ambient air quality and reduces the health risks associated with harmful emissions.”
Independent studies estimate that there are approximately 37 million households in the US with one or more fireplaces that emit 50,000 – 70,000 tons of harmful pollutants each year. Due to pollutants and emissions, many homeowners are not allowed to build a wood-burning fireplace in new housing, use their existing fireplace, or they feel guilty about burning it. In Southern California, the South Coast Air Quality Management District has banned wood burning fireplaces in new construction.
With the high price of energy and the tightening air quality regulations, many homeowners are frustrated and confused. Earth’s Flame™ is a cost-effective and viable solution for new and existing fireplaces that dramatically reduces fireplace emissions. “The reason most fireplaces have such high emissions is because they have poor combustion,” explains Steve Marple, Project Engineer. “Earth’s Flame™ promotes good combustion and we believe it has the added benefit of directing more of the fire’s heat into the living space.” Official burn tests compliant with ASTM E-2558 show an average emission factor of 3.4 g/kg; this is up to a 72% reduction in standard fireplace emissions.
About Earth’s Flame™
This new hybrid retrofit for wood-burning fireplaces features a gas-enhanced combustion system combined with an emission-reducing grate. Earth’s Flame™ (patent pending) can be retrofit into almost any fireplace, and requires no maintenance. Its 304 Stainless Steel construction ensures the reduction of pollutant emissions with the same efficiency over the entire lifespan of Earth’s Flame™. The unique design addresses the three “T”s of good combustion: Time, Temperature and Turbulence. Earth’s Flame™ starts with a Blue Flame log lighter underneath the fire grate that creates a rapid and sustained ignition of the wood diminishing the initial smoke when a fire is lit. The refractory plate above the fire keeps combustion gases in the fireplace longer for more complete combustion. The refractory plate also prevents gases and particles from going straight up the chimney and it creates turbulence. The resulting fire has reduced harmful emissions.

About Canterbury Enterprises
Over 55 years ago, Joe Leighton, the founder, came up with the idea of bringing gas into fireplaces. He designed the Blue Flame Log Lighter to eliminate the frustration of lighting fires with paper and kindling. This family/woman owned business wants to keep the American Tradition of families gathering around a wood-burning fireplace, while improving air quality and reducing the health risks associated with inhaled fireplace smoke.
