Greenwood Technologies Joins the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in
Vermont to Showcase Cleaner Technology Outdoor Wood Boilers
Company Offers Financial Incentive in Vermont for the Replacement of Old Wood
BELLEVUE, Wash. (October 23, 2008) – Today, Greenwood Technologies joined the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) and the State of Vermont at an event that demonstrated cleaner technology
outdoor wood boilers for home and commercial heat. The company and agencies are encouraging the use of
more efficient technology now available versus the old, dirty-burning wood boilers that many people currently
use. These cleaner technology outdoor wood boilers produce 90 percent less particulate emissions than the
older appliances, according to the EPA
Additionally, Greenwood is launching its Outdoor Wood Boiler Changeout Program in Vermont, which
includes financial incentives and financing packages for people that want to replace old wood boilers with
their new technology. The company is offering a $500 credit and financing which can reduce the cost of a
boiler to $125 a month.
At the event, the EPA launched “Phase 2” emission standards for outdoor wood boilers and the State of
Vermont discussed the parameters of their certification program. Greenwood Technologies manufactures
only EPA-approved biomass and wood-fired heating equipment, whether wood boilers or pellet boilers. The
company is located in the Pacific Northwest and traveled east to take part in the industry changing event at
the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources.
“Wood heat is a powerful way for an average American to influence the energy discussion,” noted Michael
Kuehner, vice president of Greenwood. “We want to dispel the belief that wood heat is not a cleaner source
of energy. The standard promoted by EPA at this event is a clear indication that wood and biomass are
increasingly important elements in our country’s energy platform.”
The event is taking place in the shadow of some of the highest home heating prices in history. According to
estimates by the U.S. Department of Energy, households using heating oil will pay an average $4.34 a gallon
or $2,644 for the heating season. This is up more than 30 percent from last winter and up more than 150
percent since 2003.
“The cost and price stability of heating fuels are the main reason we are seeing a huge surge in interest,”
added Kuehner.
Greenwood Technologies expects to top 400 percent in growth this year. At the event, Greenwood
showcased its Greenwood Aspen Series wood boiler. The Aspen emits 8.4 grams of particulates per hour
compared to the more than 70 grams produced by a traditional wood boiler.
The event was also open to the public and provided an opportunity to learn more about wood boilers and
stoves, which have been embroiled in controversy due to air quality concerns over older and less efficient
“cousins” which have sparked neighborhood disputes.
All Greenwood appliances featured at the event are part of a new generation of cleaner-burning, high
efficiency wood boilers that produce up to 79 percent less emissions and can save homeowners as much as
70 percent off their heating bills.
