Greenwood’s Wood Boiler Takes Lead with Green Label
Designation from the U.S. EPA

The Greenwood Furnace Model 100 is First Wood-Fired Hydronic Heater Widely Available in the Market to Gain the Clean Burning Designation Based on Emissions Standards

BELLEVUE, Wash. (April 30, 2008) – The Greenwood Furnace Model 100 has been designated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to be a clean burning wood boiler.  Greenwood Technologies, of Bellevue, Wash., manufactures the Greenwood Furnace (www.greenwoodusa.com).  This product sells with an orange hangtag indicating it is a qualified model through the EPA Outdoor Wood-fired Hydronic Heater (OWHH) Green Label program.

Greenwood Technologies is the first company to widely offer clean burning wood-fired hydronic heaters within the consumer market.  In fact, the qualified Greenwood Furnace Model 100 has been installed in thousands of households already, since its introduction in 2006.  The Greenwood Furnace is an indoor central heating appliance for homes and commercial spaces.  It can heat spaces ranging from 1,500 to 12,000 square feet, and burns firewood for fuel.

The OWHH program is similar to the emissions standards program implemented for wood stoves in the late 1980s, except that it is a voluntary program for manufacturers.  Wood boiler, or wood-fired hydronic heater, manufacturers submit testing data from third party laboratories to the EPA.  All clean burning wood boilers must meet Phase I emissions levels.  This means they must emit no more than 0.60 pounds (lbs) of particulate matter (particle pollution) per million BTUs of heat input.  A traditional wood boiler emits far more pollution than a clean burning wood boiler.
According to Michael Kuehner, vice president of Greenwood Technologies, there are many traditional wood boilers still sold to consumers that produce an excessive amount of wood smoke.  Understanding the differences between these traditional and high efficiency wood boilers is important when comparing models.

“Not all outdoor wood boilers are equal, but this orange tag is a clear way to distinguish the good ones,” added Kuehner.  “Anyone that is considering purchasing a wood boiler can make an environmentally-friendly choice by looking for clean burning options that meet the EPA standards.  We applaud the move by the EPA to reduce smoke and other pollutants caused by wood-fueled appliances and encourage greater accountability among manufacturers.”
