Jøtul Celebrates 150 Years of Cast Iron Design and Innovation

Portland, ME – Jøtul, a leading manufacturer of cast iron stoves, inserts, and fireplaces, celebrates its 150-year anniversary.
Since 1853, Jøtul ASA. of Norway has operated the oldest and largest cast iron foundry in the world for hearth products.  Jøtul produces approximately 100,000 stoves, inserts, and fireplaces each year to an established international market of over 30 countries.
Jøtul’s cast iron foundry is located in Fredrikstad, Norway and is equipped with the most up-to-date casting and molding machinery available. The entire plant is operated by hydroelectric power and is designed to be extremely environmentally-friendly. Jøtul’s commitment to the environment is further enhanced by the use of recyclable materials in the production of its stoves, fireplaces and inserts. Jøtul does not use pig-iron (iron supplied in ingot form mined from the earth); instead only recycled cast iron is used.
Jøtul North America Inc. was established in 1980 with the acquisition of Kristia and Associates, the United States importer of Jøtul stoves since 1973.  During the 80’s, Jøtul continued as a pioneer in the hearth products industry, introducing the first freestanding gas stove in North America.  Today Jøtul North America designs and manufactures a full line of cast iron gas stoves, fireplaces, and gas and wood inserts at it’s Portland, ME facility.  Jøtul North America continues to import all their cast iron from Norway’s clean hydroelectric powered foundry.
