New gel logset needs no gas installation
When homeowners have wood-burning fireplaces, but no longer wish to burn wood, the traditional solution has been to install a gas log set. Gas logs do require expert installers, which can get costly, and this year gas fuel costs are expected to jump significantly. Now another option has just hit the market, a new kind of log set that doesnt use either propane or natural gas. Its the Flamenco gel logset, manufactured by the well-known Condar Company in North Carolina.
Flamenco won the Vesta award for other fuels (not gas, not wood) at the hearth industry trade show this year. Its a portable logset you just set in your fireplace, no installation needed. It burns gelled alcohol (chemically something like Sterno , yet pourable) that comes in quart bottles. You just pour the Flamenco gel into the gel box, light it, and get a beautiful yellow dancing flame.
You can stop the Flamenco fire anytime you wish, like gas. There have existed gel log sets before, but they burn the gel in cans, usually three or four at a time, and look a lot like candles. Flamenco uses a patented flame controller, which makes the fire dance and leap realistically. The flame controller is adjustable, so you can extend burn time or you can have a rip-roaring fire when you entertain.
Burning gel is quite safe. Its good to have a damper at least partly open during the burn, but you can shut the damper as soon as youve snuffed the Flamenco fire.
