Convert Coal Fireplaces to Wood or Gas - # 1003
Question:In Arkansas, Little Rock more specifically, we have a lot of coal fireplaces that customers are always looking to change to a wood burning fireplace or gas. Do you have any suggestions on their option?

I’m not too familiar with coal-only fireplaces. These do not exist here in the NE part of the country. England, Ireland and other European countries do use this sort of fireplace. In those cases, they are normal fireplaces with chimneys and a grate..but the size of the chimney and openings are smaller than normal. If this is the case, you could simply put a small stove or insert into the fireplace. Depending on the age of the fireplaces, a relining (pipe up the existing chimney) may be needed. Best bet would be to have a chimney sweep or stove guy take a look at it and determine the construction details.
