Gas Fire starter for wood fireplace - # 1444

Question:

I am looking for a gas (liquid propane) fueled igniter to be installed in a new fireplace.  The client would like a gas flame to start a wood fire, then turn off the propane and burn wood. Does such a product exist?  Is it legal to install this product in a new fireplace?

Answer:

These do exist and are available in many fireplace shops and home centers. I know they are legal for natural gas, but it is possible that LP is different due to the gas being heavier that air (i.e., it can pool on the floor level)

Check with your code official or LP supplier.

They are operated by a brass key in a flow valve.
