water leakage - # 1526
Question:I had water running down my stovepipe over the
summer, nothing too terrible, but now that winter is
approaching I’d like to refinish my wood burning
stove. However, this won’t last if I don’t first fix
the problem. I think my ex-husband used tar over the
flashing around the pipe coming thru the roof. It
seems to me the tar would heat up and ooze away. Is
there something else I can use as a sealant?

Answer:
Use silicone caulk….especially around where the pipe meets the flashing, commonly called the storm collar.
11/2007 Also make sure that your stovepipe is installed correctly (male ends down). If not condensation in the pipe will leak out of the seams and down the pipe.
