Smell from Chimney - # 157

Question:

I’ve got a wood-burning insert that smells up the house when there is no fire in it.  In the spring I cover the top of the chimney with a homemade cap that prevents air from coming down the chimney (and smelling up the place).  I’m looking for something that would allow air to go up the chimney- but prevent air from going back down.  Or some sort of fan that would go in the chimney cap that I could turn on when I have no fire burning that would suck the air upward.  Have you heard of anything like this- have you any products that would solve my problem?

Answer:

Lots of folks have this problem. Amazingly enough- the best solution is quite simple. There is a product called Fireplace Deodorant- available in many stove shops- which does the job. It have a small wick. One bottle - placed in the room or fireplace- does the job for months
