store-bought firelogs - What are they made of? - # 1578

Question:

It is my understanding that firelogs/pellets are primarily made of sawdust. Are there other agricultural byproducts that are used in the commercial manufacture of firelogs?  We have been experimenting with some agricultural byproducts in making prototype firelogs, and have had some success.  We are trying to determine the commercial viability of this endeavor.  Can you point me in the right direction?

Answer:

See if you can find any contacts at the Hearth Products Association, which is our trade group. You’re probably best actually calling them, but the web site is:

Update 11/2007 Also try the pellet fuels institute: http://www.pelletheat.org/2/index/index.html
