gas stove problem - # 1625
Question:We purchased a Vanguard direct vent gas stove in December, 1999. After using it 4 days, it started shutting off during use (pilot goes out, clicking noise, etc.). It would only burn for 10-15 minutes and then shut off. The installation crew returned and checked things out on the stove such as igniter, etc. and fixed a gas leak and a vent leak, and said everything is fine, but suggested putting a shield on either side of the “box” outside. They have not yet done this and the stove is impossible to use, only burning for 5 minutes at a shot, if we’re lucky. Do you have any help for us? Why would this be happening? I have tried contacting DESA (manufacturer) in KY, but so far have not had much luck with getting a technician. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Initially sounds like an issue where the combustion zone is not getting enough oxygen for combustion due to a blockage or restriction somewhere in the vent system (symptom——tall, orange-like flames turning almost transparent before shutting down).
Or, perhaps the exhaust gases are being “sucked” back into the combustion zone which contaminating the air-to-fuel mixture (flames lift off burner before shutting down).
Have your service person check each connection for tight seals, and the termination cap for blockage and/or poor connection. Also, make sure that the venting configuration conforms with the requirements from DESA.
