Use of stove damper - # 1714

Question:

I have a stove that is equipped with a damper. Should control the heat with this instead of the air supply.

Answer:

Use both. The damper is commonly used after the wood has burned down to embers. Closing it partially at this point will hold the heat into the stove for a longer period of time.

If you have a newer EPA rated stove that damper might be a bypass damper.  If so then you would want to close the damper entirely when the stove reaches temperature.  Try to locate a manual for your stove and read the burning tips and articles at the Hearth.com information page.
