insulating around a gas fireplace - # 1718

Question:

I am pretty sure unfaced fiberglass insulation will not burn. Can you use it to insulate around a gas fireplace without the fear of burning down your house?

Answer:

Do not insulate up against the fireplace. You can insulated the walls which surround it, but placing any insulation against the firebox could be dangerous as the unit is designed to expel heat and you’d be keeping it in.
