Need fire brick to repair a stove - # 1778

Question:

A friend of mine recently gave me a stove. However, there is only one fire brick inside. It holds 10. The size is 8.75x5x1.75(not quite standard). Local stove shops tell me that I’ll have to cut the standard size down. Can I find the right size? If not, How easy is it to cut fire brick?

Answer:

www.lehmans.com - great catalog! offers a kit wherein you put cardboard inserts in your woodstove, pour a castable firebrick, let it dry and then fire up to cure your new firebrick. I haven’t tried it personally, but it sounds like it might be a solution to your dilemma. The firebrick supposedly lasts about five to seven years.
