slab wood for insert - # 1978

Question:

A friend of mine recommends buying slab wood to use in my VC insert this winter.  It is the leftover’s from the mill.  They deliver it in full lengths and you have to cut it up.  A bundle(cord) is $65.  Anyone ever use this and how is the burn rate?  It is well seasoned and red oak.

Answer:

Many folks use slab wood to heat their homes. This wood is great because you save a lot of work splitting!

You must make sure that the wood is seasoned. Most sawmills use green lumber, so be sure to store the wood in a dry place for a number of months previous to burning.  Another possible downside is that the wood may be split too small and therefore burn faster than the stove user wants it to. This can be solved by mixing the slab wood with some regular splits.
