Ventless in New York State - # 199

Question:

I live in western New York and have a 66 year old house with a non-functional gas fireplace (actually- just the brickwork and 3” exhaust pipe). I would like to make the fireplace functional again- but the story I keep getting here is that the best I can hope for is to rip out the brick work and put in a direct vent job costing $2000-$3500. A ‘ventless’ system interested me. Do you have any experience with New York laws and can you tell me where to get more information on this type of unit?

Answer:

New York State did not orginally allow Ventless Logs, but the code has changed and they are now permitted (2002)
