Convert Coal Stove to Gas Stove - # 2106

Question:

I’ve got a gibralter coal stove. †I had it suggested to me that it may be possible simply to add a gas log and run a gas line to the stove, and convert it to a gas stove. †I had been planning on replacing the stove with a new gas stove, but this is a more attractive option for me.

Is this feasible?

Answer:

Really can’t be done in any safe way with a steel box stove like this. The exception to this rule might be a franklin stove with a very large opening and hearth/flue size.

But, in general, wood stoves cannot be converted to gas.

On the other hand, most open fireplaces, both pre-fab and masonry, can be converted to gas logs or inserts.
