Smoke comes into the room periodically - # 2172

Question:

Re: Question I have a wood burning brick fireplace that is only 2 years old.  Smoke comes into the room periodically.  I read your advice on this under the Q & A.  Another problem I have is when the fireplace is not in use it smells, and permeates my house.  Even way into spring and summer when there hasn’t been any use and it has been cleaned for some time.  Should I paint the fire brick on the inside of the box?

Thank you and I enjoy your site!

Answer:

1. No reason to paint the firebrick.

2. There are two products that help the smell, one is a bottle of special deodorizer : http://www.rutland.com/sfp6/link6.htm#85 I’ve also seen claims that: http://www.gonzocorp.com/odor.htm volcanic odor eliminators work.

3. As far as the smoke coming into the room, perhaps you should consider extending the chimney. I recently invented a new product that makes doing so easier: http://www.extendaflue.com

Hope that helps.—
