Clearance to wood trim and mantels around fireplace - # 329

Question:

I have wooden trim that surrounds my zero-clearance fireplace- and would be too close to an insert as specified in the insert’s clearances. Could I shave this wooden trim down so that it is flush or less than the width of the shroud that surrounds the insert? Would this be okay?

Answer:

Many times- a shield (mantel shield)- will reduce the clearance and make it safe. Just sheet metal- bent- will do- and can be painted and mounted so as to cut off the radiant energy from the stove.
