Outside air conversion for fireplace - # 391
Question:We have a fireplace that we would like to use more. It has an ash pit that goes to the floor of the basement (fireplace is on 1st floor). It does not have any outside air inlet so it’s very inefficient. Can an outside air intake be added? Are there “kits” to do it? What are they called? How much do they cost? Is it something that a “do-it-yourselfer” could do? Please give me as much advice as possible. Thanks!

Answer:
There are such kits- available from either certain chimney sweeps or from a masonry supply yard. The difficulty of installation will vary- but it is almost certain that masonry will have to be removed. This requires a hammmer-drill and someone who has decent remodeling skills.
