Ash pits - Sealing it up - # 612

Question:

I have a 45 year old home with a brick fireplace on the first floor. Below it is an ash pit.  I have had trouble with water from the outside leaking into the pit and draining into the basement. I would like to fill up the pit.

What do you recommend I use to fill in the pit. Is dirt “ok” or would cement be preferred. It is a fairly large opening. Could I use dirt in the bottom, and cement near the top.

Answer:

Yes, you’d probably want to use sand or dirt to fill it most of the way up..and then use the cement. It’s usually just a big void left in the fireplace foundation.
