Coal-effect gas fires - # 674

Question:

We have an old house with small coal-burning fireplaces.  We have seen gas burning “coal-effect” fires in England, but our local stove dealers don’t seem to have even heard of this.
The only manufacturer I’ve been able to identify is a Belgian firm: Bodart & Gonay.  Do you know anyone else who makes a fireplace insert that looks like coal (rather than wood)?  Is it possible to get a dealer list, if anyone in this country sells this type of item?  Thanks for any info you can provide.

Answer:

There were some companies that sold these, but the market was so small that they stopped importing them . Peterson gas logs make gas fireplace “logs” that have the coal basket look and effect. However, they are an open fire and not designed for heat. A company called “Valor”  sells a coal effect stove or insert…I think they are on the web…Give a try for Valor Fireplaces in a search engine.
