Fireplace Glass Doors Breaking - # 805

Question:

We’ve got a woodburning fireplace, with two glass doors on the face of it. The glass on the doors keeps breaking.
We replaced the glass with tempered glass once.  The tempered glass shattered. Now we are trying Pyrex glass.  We just put the glass in today, and we’ve already got one door with a crack across the center of it.

Answer:

You must be burning your fireplace with the doors closed…fireplace glass doors are only good up to 500 degrees or so. Much higher temperatures can be reached if you are burning a hot fire with the doors closed. You could replace the glass with higher temperature woodstove ceramic glass. This is good to 1400 degrees F.
