Install a woodstove into a chimney that furnace uses? - # 814

Question:

Is it possible/legal to install a woodstove on a chimney that already has a furnace connected to it? I recently purchased a house that had one, but was removed. I would like to install either a woodstove or an oil fired stove seeing that my house is already heated by forced air oil. thanks for any info you can give

Answer:

It is best to give a solid fuel (coal or wood) appliance it’s own chimney. In some states, including Mass. , there are codes or guidelines which do allow multiple use under certain guidelines. I’d say “don’t so it” as a general answer.
