Safe clearances for Glacier Bay Stove - # 819

Question:

Where can we find information regarding the recommended clearances/distances from the firebox to combustible materials for a Glacier Bay insert?

We just bought a house that has a Glacier Bay fireplace insert, badly installed in a very old stone fireplace.  A prior owner built a facade out of wood-framing and sheetrock in front of the insert, with very short distances from the wood trim to the actual fire box.  I believe this is unsafe and illegal, and would like to remedy this.

Answer:

You are correct that it is unsafe…very unsafe. You must remove all the wood….maybe you can re-frame it using steel studs and face it with durarock or wonderboard cement board. It is designed to go into a masonry fireplace with no combustibles around it. There is also clearance from the sides and mantel..a guess would be at least 24” above to a wood mantel and probably 12” or more on the sides.
