Loss of Draft / Coal Stove - # 848
Question:We installed a Surdiac Coal Stove in our basement. It is connected to a 26’ masonry chimney. We have used the stove for approximately 1 month with no trouble, now all of a sudden we can’t keep a draft. The stove will run for about 3 or 4 hours and go out. We have checked the chimney and it is clear. The only difference is the outdoor temperatures are colder. Any Ideas???????

Colder outdoor temperatures can cool the chimney to a point where the draft suffers. Also, make certain to check the heat exchangers of the unit to confirm that there is no buildup of flyash. Make certain all stovepipe joints are tightly sealed with furnace cement…also, check to see if you have a cleanout door located lower down the chimney (below where the stove enters)..if so, it might be a good idea to make certain it’s sealed well (caulk it closed). In addition, I sometimes stuff a piece of insulation up into the flue above this cleanout…almost even with where the flue pipe enters the chimney. This can help the chimney stay warmer by avoiding the cold air which sometimes sits stagnant at the bottom of a chimney.
