Savings from burning coal - # 855
Question:We are buying a house that uses a coal stove to heat it. We are excited about it because of financial savings in heating costs but am nervous we won’t be able to do everything that is needed. I also have a concern over fire safety. I know you said that it doesn’t create creesote but are there other dangers to be worried about? Should we have a carbon monoxide detector? Is this something anybody can learn to do?

If you use the coal tips on our info page, it should help. Have some patience, as it takes a few weeks to learn how to burn coal properly. Yes, a CO detector would be a good thing to have. Also, make certain the stove and chimney are in good condition..and keep them that way. If you can find a chimney sweep or store that knows about your particular brand, this could also be a plus.
