On another forum that I post alot on (antique tractors and farming and just general BS) a fella from upstate N.Y. was thinkin of sellin farwood as he has a pretty sizable patch of timber and needs the $. He was askin about some varities of trees on his property and if they would be considered hardwoods. He was using some regonal slang words for the names of these trees as he really dont know much about trees I’m thinkin so I really didnt know what kinda wood he was talkin about.
Anyways, another guy who is collage edjucated in horticulture replyed and told him any deciduous tree is concidered a hardwood and any evergreen is a softwood. Well, that got my pea brain ta thinkin that just cuz this collage boy who used ta work for a big golf coarse and had all kindsa book smarts was full of shut so I repyed that I had a stove full of basswood at the moment (which I did) and iffn you want to call that hardwood I would pour milk and sugar on a split and eat it. He came back sayin I best start chewin and went into this long post that was either copyied from the interweb or what ever he was book taught. So I replyed that in the context of the origonal question about FARWOOD you could not blanket all trees into the same catagories like that. Techwise he is correct but not in the farwood world I’m thinkin.
I’m not lookin to vindicate myself in this little pizzn match but for those of you that have to buy your wood how would you feel iffn I was to sell you a load of “hardwood” that was half cottonwood and half Iowa fenceline wild plum trees?
What do you consider ‘hardwood’ farwood in your neck of the woods?

My new exercise load came today. Am partial to oak, but nice mix, Ash, White & Red Oak, Cherry, Hickory, Birch, Maple. Should keep me busy for a few weekends. Can’t wait to smell each flavor as I cut em up.
Dunno why, but I love this sheet.

I’ve been calling and calling my usual wood guy but could never reach him. I finally ask around at our truck scale whether they’d seen him and they said he left town but thought his son took over the business. Anyway, I got the son’s number and talked to him about bringing me 10 cord of Ash. He’s supposed to deliver it tomorrow.

I know what I’ll be doing tomorrow.

Hurricane Irene gave me a gift of about a cord of black locust, which I CSS’d immediately.

Just for kicks, I checked a couples of fresh splits today- around 19-23%.

Guess I could burn ‘em in the event of zombie apocalypse… for some reason I thought they’d be lower.

Was splitting some of my Hurricane Irene wood around the end of December and found these little guys. This piece was silver maple. From my research, they look like sugar maple borers, but wasn’t sure they’d be in a silver maple. I’m guessing they were there before the tree came down as the work that they’ve done appears to be a lot for a couple of cool months. Any ideas?

So i have been burning hickory this year that has been split and stacked for about 10 months. Its burning just ok. I wish it was better but I know it should be seasoned longer. I have some black locust and I believe silver maple that has been split and just thrown in a big pile since November. I just stacked it today. I am going to have about 3 cords of hickory left over for next year. Here are my questions. First will my locust and maple be seasoned for November and what should I burn first maple locust or 2 year hickory? Also I am stacking on pallets 3 rows deep. Is that ok?

OK, so I had the tune Minute by Minute by the Doobie Brothers on my mind, you have to ‘sing’ the title of the post and it may make sense . Anyway I am thoroughly tired of waiting for mother nature to give us a snowstorm (and I have been REALLY patient this year) so after getting 60 maple taps out this morning I twisted my own arm to get up in the woods and grab one of those long-dead standing white oaks with the snowmobile and sleigh. With barely two inches of snow (the drifts were plentiful on the ridge) I went ahead at 4:00 and said the heck with it, its now or not til next year. Split the whole thing on the spot and hauled it all home, stacked it up and finally came in the house at 8:40. A good evenings work if you ask me. Now I can eat supper!

Was down to the last row of birch of the 4 cord woodshed section stack.
Hauled in some spruce 5 days ago from the wood shed, when we got into the 20s & 30s.
Getting good burn times & saving the birch for when winter returns.
Need to get the spruce out of the shed & replace it with birch. Want to get all birch in the woodshed. This years goal.
I think this years spruce I have will do OK not covered in the shed. Test burned the outside stuff, dry & burned good, may try to cover it before next winter hits.
I have 1/2 of the middle section full of spruce now, (1, 3 & 4 yr old stuff) It & the last row of birch, should be enough to burn until spring.
