Vent Free Gas Fireplaces, Stoves and Logs…an industry perspective

Ventless (Vent Free) Gas Logs, Fireplaces and Stoves have become extremely popular in the last decade. But it is difficult to find a sane and complete discussion of their use and potential problems.

Their popularity is due to these features:

* They produce substantial heat output, from 10,000 to 40,000 BTU/Hr
* They are 99% Efficient
* They are available in many different designs
* A Snap to Install—Can go almost anywhere
* Relatively inexpensive when compared to Wood Fireplaces and Vented Gas Fireplaces / Stoves

Outdoor Wood Boilers…An Introduction

In A World where ever increasing energy prices are finding folks going to new measures to “Just stay warm in the wintertime without breaking the bank and busting their wallets’...” we have ushered in “A new age”. That new age is “The OWB”. Three letters combined have probably never before stirred up so much heated debate to say the least. Some folks hear the letters and “see red”. Some folks have never heard of it. Some folks (owners) think they have their merits...but few would say they “aren’t without their problems”.
So “Which came first??” The wood fired… - - - Read Entire Entry

A talk with my Dog

(Note: This is an older story that I found and resurrected - the dog in the article has long since passed on)

You’ve heard the political ramblings, the current events and all the Opinions of the Hearth - now, I’ve gone completely looney and just had: A talk with my dog..... Not one of those “out loud” conversations we often have with our pets like “hey, want your food” or “let’s go for a walk”. This was a deep philosophical discussion that consisted of few words and many ideas. First you must understand that my dog, Pepsi, has… - - - Read Entire Entry

The Legacy of our Generation(s)

How low can we go? What will we put up with?

Life is complex. On one hand we each try to keep our own little corner of the earth warm and cozy, but on the other we sometimes fail to see the Big Picture. Worse yet, we tend to pooh-pooh anyone who comes along and tells us the ice caps or melting, that there is a hole in the ozone or that cancer is caused by human activity.

Occasionally a story comes along which should show ALL of us just how small and fragile our little corner of the solar system it. Stories like this make me think of… - - - Read Entire Entry

Hearth, Home and the Meaning of Love and Life

Well, there’s a title for ya! If you don’t read this one, your natural curiosity went out the window with your other instincts.

But, it is actually a question that I ponder from time to time, especially when the weather is nice and there are less stove questions to answer. Arguably I have had a good run the last couple of months...no major crisis, injuries or other earth shattering news - no nukes dropped yet, and the biggest of all - my first born daughter getting married.

But why should you care about the subject? Isn’t that much time in the day anyway, and if we look at history those who found the answers (or were rumored to) either went crazy,… - - - Read Entire Entry

…Renewed Meaning to Fathers’ Day.

This particular subject title stood out in the forum to me. It’s author chose to convey to our community, yours, mine, and most importantly...’ours’ a rather personal experience. The story is one of inspiration and hope. It is a subtle reminder that people of great charachter, in the face of trying times...choose to “view things in a different light”. Summoning courage, in the face of Irony is inspiration. Sharing such an experience is all of the above. We choose to mark certain days of the year for what we hope will be on a positive note. Sometimes fate plays along with… - - - Read Entire Entry

…The Little Things That Ruin A Neighborhood.

...Living “In The City” can have it’s advantages. Everything is convieniently close by...good and bad. I’ve lived just about “everywhere you can Imagine”. In the country, on the road, in a “dorm communtiy” (when I went to the “college with camoflauge”...the USAF) and lastly...and currently, the city.
Gardner is a fairly small working class comunity in Northern Worcester County, Massachusetts. In it’s heyday it boasted several industries, from stove manufacturers (Florence Stove Company) to time clocks (Simplex Time Recorder) to over 19 large furniture manufacturing companies...and it earned the dubious distinction of becoming known as “The Chair City”...It… - - - Read Entire Entry

Firewood, Naked Hippies, Saunas and Stove Clearances

How to get clean in the middle of WV with no running water.

Yes, there were times in my past life when I could be considered a hippie - and a wood burning hippie at that, since that was the only possible source of heat out in the boonies of Lewis County, WV.

We found plenty of wood, sawed it with two-man saws and chainsaws. Never learned much about seasoning, as our needs were immediate, so into the stoves it went.

Being hippies meant that about 40 people were living on the mountain… - - - Read Entire Entry

“We Do what We do because….”

“...We do what we do because...” Having started this sentence how would you finish it?

For those that don’t know me too well I’m the proverbial “Jack of all trades” but I’ll stop short of saying “Master of none”. This is my first blog here on the forum. I’ll tip my hat to our webmaster for adding a blog to the forum. It’s nice to see the addition to a site that has something for everyone...and has a common interest. Whether you see that common interest as burning wood or more simply...staying warm.
Now how to… - - - Read Entire Entry

My New Adventure Restoring and Installing a Cook Stove

For other uses, see Blog (disambiguation).
A blog (short for web log) is a website where entries are written in chronological order and displayed in reverse chronological order.
The above Wiki reference is for what this document will become. I, first must say, I have never done this before, I have never kept a journal, and I am not sure what will happen with this in the future. That said I need to step back a little in time to give some background and thing that have already happened.

I have been in the… - - - Read Entire Entry

Wood, Pellet and Corn Stoves and The Tipping Point

Have wood, pellet and corn stoves hit the Tipping Point? Are they here to stay this time?

You’ve probably heard the phrase “The Tipping Point"(TP) before. In fact, it is the subject of a best selling book by Malcolm Gladwell. The TP is defined as “a sociological term that refers to the moment when something unusual becomes common” and can surely be applied to the modern growth of the stove business.

Although wood stoves have been around for hundreds of years, and fireplace much longer, the current industry did not start until the mid-1970’s. Although there were a few older manufacturers in business selling outdated products, the idea of supplying efficient solid fuel (wood, coal,… - - - Read Entire Entry

Lawyers, Guns and Gas Logs

Never let it be said that there is no value in a good flame.

One fine November, a customer came into our retail shop and purchased a set of our best gas fireplace logs. When asked whether he wanted us to install the logs, he answered no thanks, I have a friend who is a plumber and packed the logs into his fancy car.

Two weeks later, this gentleman calls and complains that the flame on his logs is not nearly as high as the display he saw at our shop. We told him this sounded like a gas pressure problem, and told him to have his plumber friend check his… - - - Read Entire Entry
