should have know when the customer told me that he doesn’t wake up until after 11am. This particular family had a auto repair business on their property, and I guess he started working late and ended late.

In any case, he claimed to be having a problem with the wood stove that we sold him for his fireplace. I think it was not drafting strong enough.

We checked the installation and made some good recommendations for improvement. While inside the home, we noticed that the vent (flue pipe) from the families gas hot water was not connected to the chimney. In fact, the pipe was turned around and the gas exhaust was directed toward the living space!

We quickly informed the customer of the problem, and told him that this was very dangerous and that the exhaust could be deadly.

“Deadly? ” he exclaimed. “Why, I took that pipe out of the chimney myself- there’s heat coming out of there and I don’t want to waste it”.

I quietly explained to him that heat also comes out of car exhaust and yet he did not have his car tail pipes hooked up to the heating system!

Here this guy had been intentionally poisoning himself and his family to the point where they were actually waking up very late each day. He’s kucky they woke up at all. I think he lost more than a few IQ points in the process.
