Greenwood originally opened its doors in late 2005 under the company Greenwood Technologies (GWT). Their first product, the Greenwood Furnace, arrived to much fanfare and received a number of industry awards. This product was available in three sizes and sold as the Model 100, 200 or 300 and was based on the updraft technology pioneered by Fred Seton. The company followed the Greenwood Furnace with the introduction of their first outdoor wood boiler, the Aspen Series, a downdraft gasification system.

With the economic downturn in late 2008, Greenwood Technologies closed its doors early the following year. The Greenwood Furnace is no longer available; however the Aspen Series is now sold as the Empyre Pro Series and the Empyre Elite.

In 2009, several former GWT employees, along with an expanded engineering team, launched The Clean Energy Company (CEC). CEC completed the development of a 3rd generation updraft technology and integrated it into a residential scale wood boiler. In 2010, CEC acquired the Greenwood brand and changed its company name to Greenwood Clean Energy (GCE).

In 2011, GCE relaunched the Greenwood brand with the flagship product, the Greenwood Frontier Series. The Frontier is the first advanced updraft technology log wood boiler, designed and built completely in the United States.

Today, Greenwood is located in Bellevue Washington, with manufacturing facilities in Tacoma Washington. Recognized as an innovator in biomass-fired renewable heating systems, they are currently developing new combustion and delivery technologies that will yield cleaner, more efficient appliances.
