Feeling the Heat

We lost about 50% of a great black walnut due to the storm that hit on Friday. It stood around 60' high with a 60' spread. It shaded a large portion of the backyard. We built our kids' playset under it. We never had to put sunscreen on them because they would almost always end up playing underneath it. Backyard gatherings with friends in the summer meant lawn chairs in its shade. Our two closest neighbors were almost as upset as I was because when they sat outside, that was the direction they always faced. There are seedlings from it transplanted all throughout the rest of the property.

It grew into four main trunks about 4' off the ground. One of the four came down along with some other 6-12" limbs from elsewhere in the tree. All told, it will probably stack out to 1.5-2 cords, & while I'm very glad for that, I will miss the shade in our humid mid-atlantic summers so much more. I'm really that hoping that what's left will branch out, fill in and provide some more shade again. I'm going to feel pretty bummed about it for quite some time.

That really is a shame to lose a beautiful tree right in the yard. Seems there has been a bit more than normal over the past year but maybe now; just seems so. As for the tree, it will fill in a lot but never be like it was. Enjoy what you have left of it though.

Sad to see that happen, thankfully no one was injured though. We drove through that storm on the way home from the Outer Banks on Friday evening, let me tell ya I've never driven through a storm like that in my life, and I don't wish to ever again. Trees down everywhere along I-95 and Rt 17, one even fell across a car out in front of us a ways....looked like a tree service was cutting all along those routes and just flinging the branches out on the highway. Unreal....

We were said to have winds of 80 mph - and not just gusts. It was sustained major wind for 2 or 3 hours. Glad you made it back safely Scotty - I can't imagine trying to drive in that mess. We had some downspout ripped off the side of the house, but I am shocked & grateful that the metal roof wasn't damaged. Next door neighbors on either side of us are still out of power but somehow we never lost power at all.

yeah they were definately sustained winds, not gusts. Not to mention the lightning, nonstop lightning for several hours of driving, it was unreal. Glad you guys made it through, too.....

Too bad. That was a beautiful tree. I'd kill to have something like that in my yard. Unfortunately, I don't know of one single Walnut where I live in S. NH. I think they will grow here if planted, and I'm trying to come up with somewhere to put them.....

Are wind storms uncommon there? We had some high winds here a few weeks ago, it is practically a biannual occurrence. Not a lot of trees down. A few big oaks I know about came down, one a road tree, power company got it, the other on a large suburban lot, the guy wanted $400 for it. Not a whole lot of damage on the local news.

Always sad to see a large well loved tree come down, but at least you are able to give it a proper cremation in your stove.....

I hear ya . . . as much as I enjoy burning wood, there are some trees on my property that I would hate to see come down in a storm . . . specifically an oak out front that has a nice shape.
