We lost about 50% of a great black walnut due to the storm that hit on Friday. It stood around 60' high with a 60' spread. It shaded a large portion of the backyard. We built our kids' playset under it. We never had to put sunscreen on them because they would almost always end up playing underneath it. Backyard gatherings with friends in the summer meant lawn chairs in its shade. Our two closest neighbors were almost as upset as I was because when they sat outside, that was the direction they always faced. There are seedlings from it transplanted all throughout the rest of the property.
It grew into four main trunks about 4' off the ground. One of the four came down along with some other 6-12" limbs from elsewhere in the tree. All told, it will probably stack out to 1.5-2 cords, & while I'm very glad for that, I will miss the shade in our humid mid-atlantic summers so much more. I'm really that hoping that what's left will branch out, fill in and provide some more shade again. I'm going to feel pretty bummed about it for quite some time.
