I think you will be fine getting the 20" .325 bar and chisel chain combo, if I were you I would also consider a simple muffler port-mod. Basically opening up your existing muffler port (or adding an additional port) to your muffler. Makes a sizeable difference in how the saw breathes, well worth the work doing it. Make sure you do it correctly, in the end you want the new muffler exit port to be just a tad smaller than the outlet port on the cylinder (where the muffler bolts onto the cylinder). You WILL have to re-tune the saw, this really makes the saw breathe WAY better, but it will be louder too. Kinda like waking up some extra HP out of your saw. I muffler-port all of my saws, it makes that big of a difference......

I will be doing this, I think I found a thread on another site with a muffler mod. Now if I can just get all the wood split and stacked in my yard I'll have time to do it.

I run an 18" bar on mine. 3/8" full comp chisel. It's really the most the saw can handle, and it'll bog when it is cutting that full 18". I have a skip chain I got a few days ago I'm going to try.

Just buy a saw in the 70-90cc range and be done with it! Scotty's quote.

Hehehehe, I knew I liked you for some reason. A C

To he honest. About a half dozen times..

I use the 455 Rancher for most duties. Its still enough saw to get most jobs done. Then the 036 is next... I love to run it, but the more I use the 455, the longer the Stihls will last!

I love to run them. But running either of those is 10"-16" wood, is like a light saber ;)

Here is a Chitty analogy : Its like owning a Rolls Royce (MS-460) a 700 series BMW (036) and Pinto (455).

If I was going out on a date (cuttin with buddies), take the BMW (036).
If going to a concert (going to a GTG), take the Rolls (460).
If going to the grocery store (cuttin in the yard), then take the Pinto (455). Its enough to get the job done, saves gas, and save miles on the other 2 ;) (like I said, Chitty analogy)

For the most part of my cutting, the 460 isnt needed. There were 2 trees last yr that I would have loved to have had it. The 455 (or a 290) is plenty of saw for majority of what wood I cut.

Im actually looking at getting rid of the 455 and gettin a Makita 6401 on CL.. Its a pretty good deal. Waiting for the guy to call ke back. He said if it didnt sell at his asking price in a week, that he would take "My Offer". Im hoping it dont sell :)

You'll need to continue with that analogy, Dex, if you end up with the Makita. My guess is you'll find it comparable to the BMW, even before the big bore.

I understand that line of thinking well, used to be the same way, but I decided if I was gonna get the work done I was gonna use the right tool. What really helped me get over not wanting to "wear" out my good saws was the $ 30.00 dollar 034 super I picked up a few years back. Put a few parts & a little time into it, & put it to work. That saw had run hard for years, was filthy dirty & the fuel tank leaked. 140 psi compression, so I fixed it on the cheap. Been using the pizz out of it ever since. That nasty old saw convinced me that the pro saws are built to work. I run an 18" bar on it, use it most of the time. The 026 gets the duty on 12" & under because it's light & fast.

I use very expensive & well built tools all day long @ my shop & don't think twice about that, so why not my saws. Clean em up after a days cutting, & they're ready to go again.

Slap that 20" bar on it, & run it like ya stole it. A thoroughbred is built to run, not lounge in the stable. There aint' a part on that saw that can't be replaced if it does fail. BTW, if you get that 6401 you'll love it too.

Remember, pull the cord, pull the trigger, smile! A C

So true....

In the process of gettin rid of saws.. Just because I dont use them. I actually need to update Signature. The MS-192T is now gone. And if I can get this 6401 for $300, the Rancher will be gone. I'm gonna try and keep it at 3 saws (60+ cc, 70+ cc, and 80+ cc) (or 036, 460, and 6401 w/ Big Bore!!) ;)

Gonna try and go cutting tomorrow. Will hopefully have some pics (of a dirty saw) for you.. :)

All right my friend, I'm gonna hold you to that. I'd hate to have to drive all the way to your place to check & make sure you're using those babies.::-)

Sharpening now.......

Got about 2 more chains left to go........

(I dont know why the White on the Saws is so bright. My 036 has a yellowish gas tank. But looks brand new in my pics? Im tellin you, there dirtier than what you see! LOL)....
