What kind of Maple is this 100_3699.jpg100_3702.jpg100_3704.jpg I have an apple tree competing with but the apple might have to come down. I found these molted insect casings on the apple and the bark is riddled with holes.

Tree looks like sugar maple.

Bug casing looks to be a cicada.

Holes look like they are from woodpeckers.

Ding, Ding, Ding - we have a winner. (See Defiant for the prize).
 
Yep that's a sugar maple, Defiant. Keep me away from that tree come February or else it'll have two or three more holes drilled in it for maple syrup taps!
 
The third picture, the one with the gray blotches is Lichen, harmless. Usually found on the north side of a tree. If in a woods and want to know what direction you are in. Look for the Lichen on the trees. Unless it is in total shade, the Lichen will be on the north facing side.
