I know his guy through the XF site....he runs one of the largest tech sites on the web.

Quite a story! Gives a little insight into how even eBay deceives! I like the part about him making a cool million in one month and then having to buy a car for his eBay contact! Wow. I gotta take some lessons from Shawn.....

Oh, this is the dude who wrote the program that puts the ads in the middle of (or after) posts!
::-)

So now I know who has been sending me down those affiliate rat holes to page after page of eBay listings for years when all I wanted was to find a real e-commerce site that had an item I needed. 99% of the time it ain't even in an eBay listing on the stinkin spam site page.

No sympathy for ya from me Shawn. Ya owe me for a lot of hours of my life I ain't getting back.

He's not looking for sympathy, but it's far out to think that eBay kept pushing this stuff.....

I really doubt Shawns millions will be drained away by this....more likely, eBay will get some slaps on the wrist, and claim they've already fired all those people....

Shawn is also famous for this:

We were moving some excess stuff from the brokering deals on eBay. Until around 2006 when they started putting links to competitor's items on the listing pages we had paid for. Talk about eating your young...

In my opinion, this dude is only a step above a slimy hacker. In fact, there is more similarity between him and a hacker than I could shake a stick at.

And Ebay, does this surprise me? No. Should they be ashamed of themselves? Yes.

This just makes me want to jump up and embrace the whole "cloud computing" culture springing up.

I agree to an extent.....a very large part of the internet culture was involved in smoke and mirrors and "anything for a buck". I guess I was not surprised by the involvement of eBay. I always knew that goog didn't clamp down on their own abusers (scraper sites built just for goog ads) as quickly as they could have...because the revenue drop would have been too deep. Instead, they did it over 4 years, which looked a lot better on their balance sheets.

Another lesson I learn from it is that there ALWAYS is a way for your employees to rip you off. Always. No matter what systems you have. My dad has some good stories about his buyer from Sears. Back then it was really out in the open - that is, you wined and dined the buyer(s). Buyers would have jobs for life at places like sears and penneys, so once you got in with them you were good to go. Not to say that my dad didn't have to meet price and quality targets - he did - but he had the distinct advantage of showering blessing on "sonny" the buyer.

I posted this link because I like the story. It shows a small part of the so-called Wild Wild West that the internet has spawned. In fact, there are a lot of stories and lessons involved in that post. I don't hold Shawn up to be a hero, but at the same time if the post is true he is probably better than 90% of the crooks out there in that he met his obligation to some extent!

So, Jags, are you saying that you don't want that promised Hearth.com automobile?
Sure I do. I will sell my soul to the Devil if I have to.;lol

Selling it to millions of users on the internet with cookie stuffing and redirects is much easier.
;)
Personal experience, eh?;lol

I avoided some temptation along the way, but nothing as grand as the possibilities of a million per month. That may have swung me toward Satan, with the idea that I could redeem myself by giving 10K apiece to each of our 10 highest posters.......

I'd love to be a fly on the wall in these big companies when the stuff is going down. I know Meg Whitman and Larry Page are smart enough to know - or at least suspect - what is going down. But there is a shared benefit in not talking about it too loudly,

You have a great place here, Craig, and hopefully it throws some pizza money your way. Don't give in to the dark side. It won't do you any favors.

As the meth dealer in Breaking Bad says to the dude "This is not the line of business for you"

Bad Dude, Bad. Just joking, I never notice the ads (shhh), and you have to pay the light bill.

It's not pink like the Mary Kay car is it?

Actually I was picturing the company car to be something more along the lines of a beat-up 1980s vintage Ford F-250 with a stake body side with at least one door painted a different color from the body.

Jake - I picture it more like this:
