Duct cleaning

I have to get the ducts cleaned this year....I can't get a solid answer from any local companies as to what I'm looking at price wise so I figured I'd ask here. I have a 1,200 sq ft cape with forced air and an oil furnace (brand new). I have about 12 air vents throughout the house. Do any of you guys know what I should expect to pay for a duct cleaning? All the local guys want to do an inspection before giving me a ball park price. Thanks

I had a local company called "Super Duct" here in Cornelia Georgia clean our civil war era house a few months ago. 2600SF. 17 floor registers, 3 cold air returns, and they pulled the blower and cleaned it in my driveway. I should mention that I have a crawl space under 90% of the home...it sits on stack of rocks. They also replaced 3 air filters. Three men x 7 Hours with all new equipment. They also disinfected and fragranced everything. They also would have cleaned all the floor registers, but I was replacing them with new. $250.00 I f you cant find local guys, check with Sears, they were around 350 but I was out of their area. Service Master....The quote was over 900.

Why anybody would ever need to get ducts cleaned is beyond me. If you use a quality filter, and change it at appropriate intervals, it should never be necessary. Having large amounts of dust in the ducts is a sure sign that something else is wrong. Unless you've just moved into a house that had 20 cats and a 99c filter that wasn't ever changed, paying those prices to have ducts cleaned is crazy.

Just my 2 cents. Rant over. Other opinions welcome.

Thats just it. The previous owner was some old bag who had 3 dogs and a cracked heat exchanger in the oil furnace. The furnace was blowing soot throughout the house for a loong time. Enough to leave soot marks on the wall from every register. That and the wife and I have allergies. I most likely will not have them cleaned after this, but the soot from the furnace is the main reason. I would love to find the $250 price. I'll keep looking. I didnt know sears did duct cleaning either..

I somewhat agree.

I have been into both sides of my system recently, relocating a few ducts. The hot side wasn't bad at all, but the return was horrible, mostly dog hair. I did a pretty fair job, but I would never pay anyone to do it.

That was my house, exactly. The heat smelled and dust/particles came out when it blew.

I had 24 vents In my CT cape and it was around $300 I think.

I'll have to look for the check. It was a company that sent me a postcard just after we moved in. Checked their website and spoke to them, they seemed credible and I've no complaints.

If there are really soot marks on the walls by the registers (and not dust) then have the heat exchanger checked very carefully. There never should be soot in a ducted system.

When I bought the house I told them the heat exchanger was shot due to the soot marks. I have a brand new furnace installed and now just want them cleaned.

Found it! New England Duct Cleaning. $399 and we had a ridiculous number of vents.

Oh, and in our first house, we had an "octopus" gravity furnace replaced by a high efficiency forced air furnace...and, um, no one told us we should have the ducts cleaned first. Turned on the heat and blew soot ALL OVER the inside of our newly painted, newly restored Victorian house. NOT fun.

Had it just done this summer.....18 vents in floor. Have gas heat , baseboard, but had a woodstove for 15 years. I was embarrased when I saw what they pulled from my house...YUCK!!. $375 here in S central Pa
