Started An Early Shoulder Season Fire

Fired up the Bakers Choice Cookstove this morning as it was 62*in the kitchen. It was so nice to get toasty warm again. This is the start of the 2nd yr with that stove, hopefully I will have some time to get some pic's uploaded as this is one hot stove.

It was 40 here last night, only 60 now and down to 40 again tonight. It's 68 in here the house, critically close to the temp at which one of our dogs will start giving me the evil eye. I might have to light off a little load of Cherry, not for my own enjoyment but to keep the Maltese guard dog happy. Fall's not here for long though...high 70s, low 80s this week.

Ran the air conditioning again today, just to get our family room down to 75. Can't believe some of you are already burning! We need nights below 40*F with cloudy days before the house cools off enough to light the stove.

first fire for us this evening. Got the F500 and the stack cleaned out today, Its always pretty exciting with the first one of the season

I broke down and lit a small load of Cherry; Stove top putting along at about 340. 71* room temp. I was shocked at how fast the temp rose in here. Before I even engaged the cat, stove top was barely warm, the toom temp had risen a couple degrees. This fire should be enough to get us through this last cold night and back into the milder temps.

Finally it is going to be cold tonight with temps in the mid 30s and a house temp of 72, outside temp as I type is 53. I was freezing so I decided to fire up the liberty for the first time this season. I was just like a kid on christmas morning, sitting in front of the stove watching the secondary burn. Burning some uglys and chucks and that has got the house to a toasty 81 degrees. I think before I go to bed I will throw 2 or 3 splits of ash in if the house is not to hot. Just glad to be burning again even if it is just a fire in the evenings.

All of these first fires....this isn't a good thing is it? I mean last year we didn't have to fire it up until almost November! But tonight it is getting down to around 39 here so I'll probably fire mine up a bit. But I'm guessing we are going to be quite happy that we have wood stoves this winter. Well that and snow blowers....

Zap the draft seems to be as strong as it was last year. I guess I'm going to be heating the community of New Creek again this winter

Last year my wood wasnt so good.

I wish I would have had good dry wood last season.

My Vogelzang stove is a very nice stove contrary to the Vogelzang bashers around.

They have a bigger model out this year The Ponderosa bigger and better to load North South loads.

Oh well I got a good deal on mine last year at Menards for $699.

Come get me old man winter I am ready for you!

We lit our soapstone stove this morning. I did have 2 small firings last weekend to dry it out but this morning was a few small pieces that got it nice and warm. Even though the stove was cleaned out and wiped off it still had the first fire of the season burnt dust smell.

hey HD- glad that "dog" will hunt for ya lol...I'm happy with my vogelzang durango- burns overnight with a few fat 26" splits and fits nicely next to a basement door where a wider E/W stove would not. Also looking forward to drier wood for year two.

Oh I love winter!! Much more than summer...sweating just makes me miserable with rare exceptions...

And I don't know about the rest of you but it costs me around $200 per cord. I keep saying I'm going to buy a good saw and collect dead wood in the warmer months...but I never do other than what is near our home which is usually only enough for a week or two's worth of wood.

It's good to see a positive report for Vogelzangs. I mean all but one review on Harbor Freight's site are positive. And for $150-ish (after the coopin) it is a steal IMO.

Only thing that makes me wary on the HF model is 1) No window in the front 2) doesn't seem to be a gasket around the burner/pot hole up top and the only solution seems to be permanently sealing it shut.

However, I know with some products, the econo-line that some stores carry is the bad one. And if you step up a notch or two with the same brand they are good to go. So I'm not sure if that is the case here.

I have some ceiling fans going but not the ac...this is my second year burning so i am enjoying the period between summer and the "shoulder season" where it's not costing much to keep the house comfortable

The vast majority of the 'bashing' is in regards to their non-epa stoves. The boxwood stoves, specifically. There has only been some quality control issues reported (with the insert, I believe) with the EPA stoves.

And this is what I assumed.

Personally I'm thinking about keeping a Vogelzang airtight barrel kit put away...just in case.

The price of the pipe/thimble/etc. keeps this from being cheap. But the ability to have a self-contained, easily stored long term, wood stove kit seems pretty comforting. TONS of rave reviews on these pretty much everywhere I've checked.

I don't care for Winter and usually keep it 68-72 in here...
