So it was 96' eh? All I remember was that I was in 5th grade at the time.

Blizzards in 83, 93, and 96, each breaking some local all-time records. The year of the ice storms was winter of 93/94, when everyone's back yards turned to ice skating rinks. T'was colder'n witch's teat that year.

Also had some killer snow and cold in 2001, and "Snowmageddon" in 2010.

Weather Channel Predicting another warm winter for the midwest.

Looks like that one small fire I had is going to be it for a while. Temp rising nicely today and it's still 68 in here.
I was finally able to light a fire that was just right to keep the place at 72* max; I usually roast us out on the first fire and we are opening widows. ;lol

That's what I'm seeing as well...

You all need to grow some more hair! I couldnt Imagine lighting a fire at those temps. I just lit a "shoulder" burn when it hit 19 degrees this morning and was about 59 in the house when I woke up. Throw on a sweat shirt and some quality pants and yall are good to go!
i have an endless amount of standing dead ash so i dont think its a big deal plus is comfort for my wife and i to see it going

What are these quality pants of which you speak? You reminded me, I used to have a couple pair of denim jeans that were lined with flannel...those thing were da bomb! No cold denim touching the legs! I may have to get some more of those. I usually just wear sweats...long undies if needed. But at 59 room temp, my hands would be cold, my fingers wouldn't work, and I would have to wear gloves. I can't type too well with gloves on. Maybe I just have a low metabolism. I have a low heart rate, anyway... On the flip side, I can take some heat. If I have to, I'll cut and haul wood when temps are in the upper 90s and the humidity is 50%. My fingers work great in those temps. ==c

Geez... you guys sound like a bunch of women.

My mother-in-law wears long under where 362 days per year. They usually come off for a few hot days in July. ;lol

Man rule #1: Never admit it's too cold in the house, unless there's real danger of pipes freezing.

Or old men. Unfortunately I was born too long ago to be very young any more. Not quite ready for Florida yet, but... Heck, even when I was in my twenties, I didn't enjoy those WI winters. Just never embraced it, I guess. When I moved here, it felt like I had moved to a tropical island. ;lol

I hear ya'. Just had to give you a hard time, though. ;)

Lit ours this morning....63* in the house....threw in a pice of Maple, Cherry, and even a piece of Hickory as a test to see if I'm good to go on my stacks. Everything seemed to burn well....Cherry had a little sizzle, but it was a little wet going in (got rained on), as the fire burned down, I threw in another, bigger piece of Maple....went right up.....feeling good about this season....had the house up to 70* fairly quick, and the stove temps went up quicker than last year....almost 600* without any effort, and just a few sticks.
Almost forgot....pictures

Fall is here. Let the burning commence!
Cleaned Miss Esse inside today, all the oven passages , chimney pipe etc. Installed a new gasket on the cook top hobb, while it was open. Also added door glass gasketing which worked out fine. Esse used some type of glass protection strips, not really keeping things air tight. She is now. First fire of the season today.

Just fired up my Quad 3100 for the first time this season . Two dogs and two cats parked their butts right in front of it !

Thanks Beer Belly. This will be our second season with the Esse. We've been real happy with the stove. Puts out some nice heat and it's a joy to cook with as well. What a nice feeling when it's bitter cold out and your cooking your food with the Esse, then you stop and realize , she's heating your place too.

First burn, albeit small, to go from 64 degrees in house to 72. I refused to sit and watch the Pats/Bills game and have a few cold ones in a damp cool room.
