I have great memories of squirrel hunting with my dad in WV.
Folks had 20 acres in Preston county, next to Grampa's 100 acres.
We had a hickory grove that was our favorite place.
Good eating too.

Now I hear turkey hunting is good there, never saw one when I lived there.

But you have a hydraulic splitter Dennis . . . surely it isn't that bad . . . I mean, sure it may not split as cleanly as standing dead ash or oak . . . and it does have a bit of a smell, but that splitter should do a pretty good job on splitting it . . . for the most part . . . unless you get a "Jag's Special."

I had some American Elm last year. Bark was still attached. I gave it away after trying to split a few rounds. I pass on any I see.

I like having elm. Yeah, its stringy when splitting it in the green, but the BTU's are worth it. We did several big elms the summer, they were dead and split OK (God bless those hydraulics!). Nice load, steeltown! Especially before going to work!

I have a cord + of American Elm on the ground waiting for me. Tree service cleared the power company's right of way across my property last summer. Of couse I told them to leave the firewood. Come to think of it, I think they came looking for me when they saw my wood stacks. LOL. I did get some nice locust, but most of it is elm. I'm not a fan of it anymore. I've burned a lot of the stuff. It burns nice, and it's not bad on the BTU's. For the extra work splitting... if it wasn't on my land I'd pass.

We've found that if you split elm when it is still green this is where you get the stringy stuff. That will dry super fast and hen when you put the log in the stove it burns super fast.

Jake is right, we have a hydraulic splitter and love it. It will split the elm when it is green although it does make it work a bit. However, when we wait for the elm to die (it doesn't have a long life) and then wait further for the elm to lose its bark, this is where it gets interesting. By waiting this long, almost all of the elm splits more like you would expect with something like maple. You just don't get that stringy stuff which leaves the log intact rather than shredded. This will make the elm burn much, much better. We also tend to leave a few more logs in the round and it works great.

this elm split like a dream..ive had the stringy stuff before.....this has been down since the storm back in july and nothing really big 12-14 inches was the big stuff
