Log 6 ID Please..I have no clue!

I believe it IS some sort of Ash and here's why; look at picture 8/9, that's 8 of 9, the one that shows the end cut, blow it up and use the little magnifying tool and you will see in the center of the cutside there is a small little hole; I don't know if any other trees have this hole in the center but I've always found it in Ash.

Bruce, you are going to cause a rumble here soon with all these ID's!

DON'T FORGET to tell us what your friend decides that other one is, Tulip Poplar, Hickory, Maple or whatever-we need to get a "final answer" on that one!

Green is almost identical to White,both in wood color,density etc.Bark varies a little,can be difficult to tell them apart sometimes.Lots of Green around here,planted for shade 20-40 yrs ago,to replace the massive old American Elms killed off by DED in the 60's & 70's.One out front next to street in front of sidewalk in that grassy area the city 'owns' yet I have to mow it...lol

Dutch Elm Disease,actually. So named because Elm burl logs imported from northern Europe for veneer into America had the elm bark beetles that helped spread the disease with our native ones. .Also early research into the disease was carried out in Holland.

Yep, looks like ash to me; just cut two trees up this week and they split real nice when you get to a straight grained section. Enjoy the low moisture wood!

This my friends is sassafras. I have looked long and hard at these on my property for 17 years. Bark is right, grain is right, light weight. etc. Should be a smell if it is a fresh cut live one, like sassafras tea..

I agree with nford. Definitely not sassafras but can understand why that is thought. Many times different trees are identified rigthly or wrongly because the bark resembles something else. We saw that with white oak vs hickory recently on here. We've even seen popple wrongly identified.

Grain is too dark for ash to me. I am not seeing white. The checks on the bark are too deep and big for ash for that size of a trunk. He said it was on the light side. Ash is pretty heavy. Sassafras is not. Sassafras doesn't smell much if it is not fresh either. Leaves would tell the story for sure. May not be sassafras but doesn't look like the ash around here. Said it was pink on the ends. Ash is white, sassafras is pink. No big deal. These tree ids are hard just looking at pics.sometimes for sure.

It's Green Ash not White, the bark of Green Ash has deeper checks on the bark and the wood is more of a brown color that white, I guess I will have to take pictures today and try and figure out out to post them and yes the wood is not as heavy.
