Finally got on the Silver Maple that's been down a few years, got the BL 2 yrs ago. Most of trunk was suspended just off the ground. Overall length was over 100' dia at cut 28". Hoped the trunk wouldn't roll downhill (it did), wasn't sure if the stump/roots would rock back in it's hole (it didn't). Second cut of trunk rolled also. Now it's roll the rounds down to splitting area then wheelbarrow to the road behind the house. I'll update upon completed stacking. Thanks Wood Duck, swag and Savage for responding to tree id and getting me psyched to go for it...I'm becoming a Wood-A-Holic...you ba$tards...

That why you cut from the up hill side ;)
Good job. Those downed trees are not always easy !

Gonna have a nice big stack of primo wood for next year.
I bet those rounds are heavy .

Curious how the maple splits, as it dries it can get pretty tough?

The small heavy bark one on top looks like locust ?
Might be one more round on the stump of the maple ?

South end of a north bound white tail :)
Nice pics

Yeah started cut from downhill finished uphill (20" bar)...my first experience w/Maple...cut and split like buttah......other was very straight locust...yes, one more round on the stump...you'd get two...lol...

If I had a chance to get sugar maple here, I'd be cutting the roots too LOL :)
Those bigger limbs on the ground wouldn't be in a brush fire ;)

Good job, albert1029. Silver maple is always welcome in our mixture of wood flavors. It can be shoulder season wood, load re-starter, kindling or fast-drying supply (for years that we didn't keep far enough ahead). It is versatile and always surprising how much lighter it gets after drying out. Good pictures!

Welcome to the club Albert. I bet you really enjoyed how easy that wood split too. Even the deer will love what is left over. They love that stuff.

Welcome to the club Albert.
thanks...bucked some big rounds today, looks like I'll get 12 splits out of most of them...yes, split so nicely, easier than cherry... sure could have used a cant hook, preferably with a stand, may be my next purchase...should get over a cord for sure...I'll post a picture when I'm done...didn't know that about the deer...hope you're feeling better!IMAG2003b.JPG

I surely would not get one with a stand; just a good cant hook. Also, that wood will make some of the best kindling you can make. I could split those logs all day long and love it!
