Log 45 ID Please, Is this a young Lockust?

I originaly thought it was an oak, but it lifted to easy with the bucket and it didn't smell like oak when cutting. The rounds are lighter than oak also. Is this locust?

Not locust, for sure. Definately some kind of oak, probably black. Either way, great stuff for the stove, let 'er season for three years if ya can.

Definitely Black Oak,I see them all the time.Oak Wilt has really taken its toll the past decade or so.

Okay thanks guys. That was my original thought because of the muldury rays, but I wasn't sure if oak is the only wood with them. The largest round looks a little punky in the middle. Is that the oak wilt? It is probably why the log is light too.

All wood has Medullary rays. It really shows up well in the oaks as they are quite large. In most other species they are hard to see with the naked eye. But if you quarter saw other species and plane the lumber they can be seen. Where Red and White oak rays will be sometimes a half inch wide, Hard Maple or other species maybe as small as a pencil lead, or even smaller.
