Avalon Olympic installed yesterday

I installed an Avalon Olympic into the fireplace of my 1912 Sears Kit House yesterday with four of my buddy's. Only cost me a couple of 12 packs and a bottle of scotch.

I had to chop out some brick to allow for the 6" flu but it is installed , fired up, and putting out some nice heat.

I hope this serves me well for many years to come. Thanks for the wealth of info on here. I have plenty of seasoned ash on hand to get me through this winter.

Any other Avalon Olympic owners out there???????

I had an Olympic for 4 years, it was a great stove, loved the bypass feature! I have since built a new house and have a Hearthstone Heritage, would have bought another Olympic but it would have been too much stove for my house size.

Hey Pepp31 , any tips on running this stove? This is my first woodstove although all my friends have one.

I found it easiest to start the stove using the bypass. I would let it get to about 100 and then close it. I would let the stove get up to 400 before I would dial it back. The stove works really well with overnight burns. Do not be afraid to load it to the gills!

I have one in my finished basement and it puts out some serious heat. Like Pepp said, the bypass is very handy.

Make sure the roll pins are secure in the secondary tubes, the tubes come out of place easily if you bump them with a log.

Thanks, I will keep an eye on the tubes, I will try the 100 degree with the bypass, 400 degree before banking it down.

I got the optional blower and it blows the heat out pretty well. This is my second night , still learning.

Your olympic is the same as my liberty in fact even made my the same company and I will tell you that on a full load of wood that thing will crank some serious heat. With my liberty on a full load it is impossible to keep it under 650 degrees. I would suggust you not fill it up until you are home all day with it and then fill it up and play with the air settings to see how it will react with a full load of wood. Its not uncommon for my liberty to be shut down all the way and still be cruising at 750 degrees

I have not had the courage or the need to stuff it full yet, it is running in the 450 degree range right now.

one other question, what is your procedure when adding wood, do you open the bypass a suggested in the instructions or do something else???

How I wish mine would run at cool when its not real cold out, it won't even run that cool with 2 splits in it

You have to open the bypass on my liberty because the door opening is so large, if not the smoke just rolls out. Are you loading north/south or east/west?

had some smaller ash wood yesterday loaded north/south but tonight have some longer pieces that I loaded east/west. It seems to not go above 450 deg .
I am only loading 3 at a time though and have the fan/blower on medium to low.

East/west I know gives you a slower more controllable burn, but after the first year of wood rolling against the glass and reaching in the back of HOTTT stove I decided to cut my wood short to load north/south. Others on here have said to rake all the coals to the front in a row and then reload. Its supposed to keep all the wood from outgasing all at once and make the fire easier to control but that has never worked for me. Even when coals are raked to the front and reloaded my stove still goes into incineration mode. Just keep playing with it and you will get the hang of it and did i mention be ready for some serious heat

Beer Belly, no....... I just got the plain jane, no frills, black legs, black door etc.... .

Anybody have the rear mounted fan? I got it installed but find it rather noisy but not too bad on low.

I have the fan on my liberty but only use it when the stove goes nuclear and gets close to the overfire temp of 800 to cool it down. Is 87 in the living room now with no fan running, I can only imagine how hot it would be in here if the fan was running. We have had our christmas trees up since the 13th of october but haven't been able to really sit and enjoy the one in the living room because its always to hot, I was hoping the fan would push some of the heat out of the living room but it just makes that room hotter. The fan is also good to warm up a cold house in a hurry.

I have only had my stove installed since Sunday, this is the third use , I am burning it with 2 year old (3-4 pieces) Ash after a good coal bed , and it does not go above 500 deg. with the "air contol" all the way in (with the fan on medium).

The fan cools it down pretty quickly I have noticed.

Still learning best way to load, when to bank down, etc........ I think I will be happy with this unit. I will take some pics and post when I get a minute.

Does the manual state this 800 degree temp or is this just the general temp on steel stoves?

Yeah my manual states that 800 degrees is considered overfired and its only seen that temp one time in the last 3 years

Just checked out that manual....WOW...amazing how much better a manual they have compared to Quadrafire.
