There are a ton of trees down on around the jobsite I am working on.
Mostly red oak, few maples but Im not sure about this one.
The very top was buried under a couple of oak canopies.
So I don't know what the leaves look like.
Except it had a bunch of these green saplings sprouting off the sides with these leaves.
It was perfectly straight.

Looks like Sassafras to me . Did it have a scent similar to root beer ?

I agree its Sassafras. I have a bunch of it and IMO makes great shoulder season wood, even better than poplar or pine. A little higher in BTUs vs pine/poplar, dries quick, smells great splitting, and very low ash.

Lucky you to get a sassafras that big! Around here they don't get very big and most are really crooked. Take a look at that leaf that looks like a mitten. You'll never forget it.

I have to add that just a week ago we had a sassafras starting to bud out. It forgot what time of year it is.

Tha'ts one big sassy! I'd be making some boards out of that trunk. I don't ever see them that big around here!

It should have a very unique scent to it, like ol' fashioned root beer. That is the saffrole oil in the tree.

Since it's rare that they are that big and straight I feel bad that I cut it up.
..... NAH..... I don't feel bad at all.
