Man, my phone takes horrible pictures. Anyways...

I know you are all jealous of these monster stacks. Especially the poplar on the left. I wasn't sure if I'd have enough room for the red oak on the right. That should last me a few years, right?

On a serious note, I took my 5yr old son out to the lot and he helped me pick up sticks to throw on the slash pile while I bucked and split. We were only out an hour or so, and it was a bit slow going. I had to make sure that anytime the saw was picked up that he was far away and didn't come close while sawing.

Either way, I'm excited for the meager start of my stacks. Hopefully I can find some more oak next year. There are still a few logs in the pile of oak, but it isn't going to be more than a couple feet tall on those 6-8' logs.

Gotta start somewhere. Well done. Especially for getting the boy involved.

Is that dirt really that dark on its own in the foreground of the shot? Or did you stir up a burn pile that had been in that area?

It really is that dark. We don't have much black dirt here (4" average on top of sandy soil). But it seems to be pretty black where it is though :). My wife still hasn't seen the mess my muddy shoes made in the truck today. *hides*

Like Pen said "gotta start somewhere"......can't wait to see the pics once you get that area chock full of wood:cool:

Good days work
Don't know if it will "last " a few years but the oak will be "ready" in a few years :)

Keep cutting & adding to it, something will pop up & you'll be adding to the total fast.

Have fun !

I don't have any concerns about my ability to acquire vast amounts of poplar. When I cut and split that stuff, I tell myself I'm doing it for the fun of it. Because the economics of it likely don't go in my favor after fuel and time.

love the pup in your avatar...post pictures as you progress...looks like Sasquatch territory....

LOL
If I put my time in the equation, I'd have to send myself to jail for wage abuse.
I keep a vague running tab on fuel used .
I don't count any other supplies like, chains, files, gloves, ropes, log chains, ATVs, chain saws & other tools or wear & tear on my PU.

If I just heated with what ever utility was most efficient I'd probably save thousand of hours of my time.
Sell everything associated with processing wood, that would handle 3 to 5 years worth of fuel bills, maybe more.

It's so much bigger than the economics.
The enjoyment has to be there, it's fun rewarding work for most of us.

Way to much work to do it for the economics alone.
A part time job would buy more wood than I can process, be more "business smart" & consume allot less of my time . :)

The "addiction" to cutting & burning your own wood from tree to ashes. Well, it's a curse LOL :)
I have about 12 hours of my time in one cord & that's just getting the rounds home. I'm nuts. I have a problem. But I'm happy ;)

Maybe I should go back to the 2" X 4" electronic thermostat on the wall.
. Scared myself, flash backs & shakes started.
Whew, glad I thought about it. Time to add wood to the stove for the night, now feeling OK again. ;)
Time to get a flash light & go out & look at the stacks! (looking at them helps them dry you know ) LOL :)
May go check on the saw too, might need to sharpen the chain & clean it a bit.::P

Never really figured it out all that much, but I'm probably making about $4-5/hour tops when processing.;lol But its better than any fitness program I can think of.Havent set foot in a gym since I was 16.

Ya, I could easily buy oil with all of the O.T. I put in, but it's no fun looking at the oil tank or sitting by the boiler and staring at that little sight glass.

Exactly. Even though with this poplar I'll probably spend more time reloading wood than sitting in front of the fire :)

Not weird
But like me & others here, probably not "the norm" either LOL :)

None of you folks here on hearth.com are "the norm". That is why I like ya. Nice work Shane N. Good job getting that young one involved. Our little ones help us out as well. Great, great experiences for the little ones.

Thanks. He enjoys all the time he can get with daddy. We are going to go out again this weekend to work on it again.
