Drove by the Lowe's in Auburn two days ago, and was curious to see what they had and they had stacks of Green Team Platinum, and Maine Choice. I stoped and looked from my vehicle as I drove by the outside display I am certain I saw the printing Paltinum.

You would be correct. Greene Team sells their pellets to Lowes. Greene Team Platinum are the pellets they ship to Maine now. Lowes also sells Maine Choice and HD does as well in some stores. I was in the Lowes in Augusta last weekend. They are now selling Green Supreme as well as the Green Team Platinum and Maine Choice. It's the first time I have ever seen Green Supreme and I've been buying pellets since 2007.

I haven't tried any "greene" pellets yet. If I remember they were $279 a ton. Maybe if they drop the price.

I think the GTs at $234 ($260 per ton minus the 10% Coupon) a ton is still a good value. Less ash, less dust, less fines and better heat than the GS by a long shot. I'd still like to find some Somersets to try. I've never even seen them before.

There are certainly markets for everything and wood pellets fail to be an exception to the rule. For many customers, going to Lowes and/or Home Depot for wood pellets is a good option. Their pellets are priced very well and tend to attract those who shop on price not exclusively, but certainly before anything else. The challenges that the Big Box store will have in trying to offer GT as a higher-priced superior pellet, is that their customer base for the most part is looking for price over quality. I had a long conversation with Robbie (who is one of the industry's true gentlemen) about this back in September and my feelings were that customers who go to Lowes are looking for $199/ton vs. a higher priced "Super Premium". This is not an absolute rule by any means, but more of a generalization which appears to be holding true. On the other end of the spectrum, I sell eleven different brands of wood pellets, and my price-point pellets are some of our slowest moving brands, totaling less than 900 tons for the entire season of the $199/ton stuff, because we tend to attract a differently-motivated customer. Again, there is no right or wrong way to do it and customers will do what is right for them. Gotta love this country!

What was Robbie's response? He has to know that Lowes may be pricing him out of next years market. I know several other members have reported him stating that there is no difference (pellet quality) in the different packaged bags Lowes is selling. I have his pellets this year and the heat is better than what I expected, albeit more ash than I prefer. But I won't pay $270/ton next year for GT's.

I talked to robbie early last winter when Lowes started selling the platinum bag at a much higher price and told him I would not be buying Greene team at three Lowes price gouging price especially because their reasoning was that they were better than three regular bags. I liked them but not at $274/ton. I would be very interested to see how many tons they sold last year prior to Lowes increasing the price versus this year during the same time period. Certainly seems like I am receiving fewer emails from Robbie this year....

Yes but when they have the GT for $274 sitting next to other brands like GS and MC at $209 what do you think the people that don't know any better are buying.....?

If those were my choices, I'd be going someplace else. But when I was buying GT's at $197, I still saw a lot of beople buying Maine Choice at the same price. So go fgure.

Case and point, when I went to Lowes this past weekend to oink up more 'Sets, two different guys were walking out pushing a cart with about 10-12 bags of Cheat River. Now, they are currently carrying Cheat, 'Sets, Prestos, Greene Team and Timber Heat....all are the same price....and I can tell you NO WAY IN HELL would I personally buy the Cheats over any of the other brands and I haven't even tried the Prestos or Timbers yet.

I bought 2 ton Greene Team at Lowes earlier this year @ 209 after trying them out last year and liking them. When I went back for more a couple weeks later they had the platinum at 270. No way I am buying at that price. Didn't want their Green Supreme at 209 either.
I ended up going across the street and getting Stove Chow @209 from HD (After they tried to load a pallet of deicer anyway). I had never tried SC before but the first bag seemed to burn hotter that the GTs.
In short, I think Lowes gouging has converted me from Lowes/Greene Team to Home Depot/Stove Chow.

In my stove, the Greene Teams are a superior pellet to Stove Chow but $50 more a ton has to be considered.

X2. I have gotten a few emails in the past weeks about several Lowes placing orders. It'll be interesting to see what the prices are in March or April, especially of we have a winter like last year. I just would pay the extra $20/ton for Hamers if Lowes sticks to the $270 price. At least HD knowS what is going on and they are taking advantage of the mistake Lowes is making by keeping their pellets at $209 plus honoring the Lowes coupons and military discounts. Competition will even things out. Gotta love capitalism.
