I got a new moisture meter today and wanted to test it out so I figured Id just split some splits with the 5 ton homelite, all I got was a hum, tried a different socket same thing, anyone know what I could check to maybe fix this thing? I just used it about a month or so ago to make some kindling and its been stored in my garage since I bought it last year.

thanks for any advice

Ill have to try and find a manual online for this splitter, sounds like its easy enough if I can get the part.

thanks Nate

Can you spin the motor by hand ?
If yes, Nate is probably right.
Don't let it hum for long , it''ll heat up & damage the windings.

I gave up after two seconds, I knew it wasnt gonna work, Ill try spinning it by hand and report back.
I have a gas splitter and use that for most of my splitting, just use the electric for kindling, cant even sell it if it doesnt work so I have to try and fix it.

I'd say Nate is probably right. Do a google search on that splitter and maybe type the words "motor hums", in quotes just as I did, in the search box.

if its a Capacitive start motor it sounds like the capacitor. You got to have lead/lag to get motor to start, so if its humming propably not getting the current lead it needs.

Was it stored so that moisture or rust could've gotten to it? Just brainstorming...

A long run of light or medium duty extension cords can do this to a good sized electric motor....

Yeah, what are the specs on your extension? Try one shorter and fatter and see of that changes things. Otherwise, is there anything else on the circuit that's sucking a lot of juice?

Yes, I use a 25-foot 10-gauge cord on mine. I just bought another 25' length to get a little more flexibility in splitting location, but haven't tried it yet. I'm hoping it won't damage the motor, and I'll be sure to take it easy on larger rounds.
