Hey guys. My parents are looking to sell the Jotul Firelight model 12 that came with the house when they bought it back in June. I was originally going to take the stove and use it in the house I'm building but decided to go with a coal stoker stove instead. They are putting in a coal furnace and will have no need for the Jotul so it needs to go. The stove is in beautiful shape and has no flaws at all that I can find. No broke glass and the cat looks good too. The only problem I have is that I have no clue what to ask for this thing. Can anyone tell me what a stove like this would sell for? Thanks guys

I have bought and sold a few Jotul's. I think it depends where you are located, the east coast can be flooded with used Jotul's at times and other parts of the country have never heard of them. Is it flat Black or Enamel? No warped parts? How old is the stove? Depending on these things I would say somewhere between $600 and up to $1000, again it may depend where you are located.

As mentioned . . . it depends on your location. Here in Maine Jotuls and Vermont Castings are two stove brands that have a loyal and devoted following and as such they tend to command some pretty good prices on the used market place. Condition also plays an important part. You m,ay want to check out your local Craigslist or local shopper (here in Maine we have Uncle Henrys) to see what similar stoves are going for . . . or rather . . . what folks are asking for.

Condition is everything. I spent the summer shopping Firelight 12's, and saw them sell for every price between $200 (in need of a rebuild) and $1500 (freshly rebuilt). The typical price for one in good used condition in Blue-Black Enamel that needs absolutely nothing repaired is about $800 - $900.

Flat black brings less than the BB Enamel on any Jotul, but I haven't seen a Firelight 12 in flat black myself. The other odd colors sometimes sit a while before selling at all, unless you find the right person wanting a red, white, or green stove.

Now... where the hell were you this summer? I ended up buying a rebuilt one for $1500, mostly because I couldn't find one local in good "as used" condition. Also, what's your location?

Thanks guys. I'm located in New York in the Albany area. Here's a couple pics of the stove. It's in amazing shape needs absolutely nothing done to it. So would asking $1500 be about right?

That is a nice stove! You might get $1500, but you will never know unless you post. Especially now that winter is coming, someone will grab it. I know I would probably offer something close if I was in the market. Put it on CL and see how it goes. If you don't get 1500, I am sure you will get something close. Good luck!

Just curious, what's that pedal for?

It opens the top-loading door and opens the cat bypass (simultaneously) so that both hands can be used for loading.

Nice pics of a beautiful stove.:)
Serious buyers will want pics of the inside too.

I will get some inside pics as well. I just snapped these quick with my phone the other day. I work long hours and get home late everyday and have to be back to work after 10 hours off so I don't get around to much on work days lol

Looks great! If it's in as good shape on the inside, someone is going to get a nice stove. Personally I think $1500 is a bit high unless it is close to perfect inside as well. If you are hoping for a quick sale, be negotiable, especially if you live in a rural area where there are not many potential buyers.

I assume this stove is not where it was when it was burned for the photo? Seems it would need some type of non combustible surface under it?

I will try to remember to take a pic tonight of the inside but I think it is nearly perfect. And yes the stove has been moved since we bought the house. The original owners had a pad underneath it. The floors were originally real hardwood but my parents wanted a high quality laminate because we have 5 large dogs that would tear the floors up so the stove had to be moved when the laminate was laid. It hasn't been fired yet this year and it most likely wont be...by us at least lol

Really? What did you miss?

I paid $1500 for three unique reasons:

1. Freshly rebuilt, new paint, new gaskets, new cement. Not just good condition, but NEVER fired.

2. I'm in the position of having more money than free time. I'd have probably paid over $3k for one, if I had to.

3. I was in a rush / didn't want to wait for one to MAYBE show up this fall. I knew I wanted this model, and no other substitute.

You may luck out and find another buyer in similar circumstances, but that's highly unlikely. White is very cool, but most folks want black, so you have a more limited market. I'd normally put my best guess at $800, but Sandy has enough folks shopping stoves in NY right now, that you may luck out and get higher.

Agreed, I was thinking about $1200 if in an urban/suburban area or $1000 if not.

I don't expect $1500 that's why I said "ask" not demand. I'll be flexible on the price for sure but why not post it a little higher. It doesn't need to sell right away we aren't strapped for cash just looking to make up the difference on the cost of the coal furnace we bought that's all. If I sell for $1500 or $800 makes no difference to me in the long run but who doesn't want a couple hundred more. I agree the stove being white may not help in selling but ya never know right?

If you include a bunch of the pipe you'll do better, IMO. People forget how expensive that can be.

$1500 for a used stove seems like a lot to me. But it is pretty. The white is NMS but I could see it, maybe in a coastal cottage or a more modern house...?

Asked and advised. Best of luck with the sale.
