I just put however much wood in the stove that I need, and stick in a piece of fire starter between some of the splits. I don't use kindeling or anything like that.

I use Strike a Fire from Walmart, $10 for 48 that I turn into 144. ($0.07 per fire) They are pretty much the same as a Super Cedar, just available to me much cheaper. The Super Cedars shipped to AK run ~$50 for a 54ct box. If you break up in 4 that's about 0.23$ a fire.

Wow. Our Walmart gets $6.97 plus tax for eight of those things.

Looks like you got all the advice you need on using the SC's but I would add that I only use 1/8 of one and it works great. I do use kindling all the time however. I scrounge 2x4's and such through the year and cut them to about a foot and split them up. Always have plenty on hand and also any cedar I can get my hands on. I've never had any problem lighting fires with tinder and kindling but once I tried these, I was hooked. With the few fires I light once the season gets going and cutting them into 8 pieces, cost isn't that big a deal at all. Thomas may be using a whole one but he has an advantage on the rest of us... :)

I have to admit I'm tempted to try a full SC sometime just to see it burn. However, I imagine that with my wood the pile would overcome the SC well before I could enjoy any marginal benefit. Now perhaps if I used a full round I could start full splits top down!

I take a regular size split ( usually softwood because it lights easier ) that has a nice level side to it and lay it in the stove, level side up. I'll take 1/6 to 1/5 of a Super Cedar, light it and lay it on top of the split. I never lay a SC in ashes. I then take smaller pieces of wood ( bigger than kindling size ) and lay them around and on top of the flame. It doesnt take long for the log the SC is laying on to catch and take off. Walla, you have fire...
