My new rack and firewood , Pictures

Pic. 1-2 are of my rack . It will hold alittle over a cord . Made out of wood that came from homedepot that I got for 85% off. The wood in rack now is what the Gov. housing cut and drop on my side. We gave the guys about 12 homemade cherry muffins for the wood.
Pic-3 is elm I got today at the city wood dump. I go up there just about every day to check on wood.

Like I said before 95% of my wood comes from up town and I try to get it all. There still is about 2-3 cord up there now.

They can't sell it so they mark it down. I got a freind that works there and he lets me know what they have and most of the time he brings it to me. I just pay me back. It does not just apply to wood, I have got bags of cement for less that 50 cents because of holes or split bags, same for insulation .

Sorry for the noob question, but do a lot of cities have 'city wood dump' places? Where would I check on this? The craigslist free section is the only resource I have at the moment.

Yes they do[most], ask your water department, township and or city mayor and so on down the list. Here I am about the only one that cuts and I cut all year long, winter and in the 100 heat. If I don't get it it will be burnt, or I help them pull it out and they push aside for me. Also check with tree trimmers as they will bring to your door if they are in town, they do here. Pic 6 every bit of that was brought to me and dropped in my drive way along with about a cord of dead pine this year. Been using that, pine, in my shop.

I think your plan to add the lean-to on to the green building is a good one, hope you get it done sooner than later. What I see you have happening now is a common mistake many people make when stacking wood. You have a lot of wood stacked right against the wall of that green metal building directly under the drip line off the roof. That creates a compound problem, first is that all the rain/snow that lands on that roof runs off the edge and lands directly on the wood stacked against the wall. Second problem is that once that wood leaning against the wall gets soaking wet it would have a lot of trouble drying because the air can not circulate around it because it is so tight to the wall.
I have seen a lot of cases where people do this (stack wood under the drip line of a roof), the one thing you have going for you in this case is that the wall is made of metal and won't rot. Many times people will do the same thing up against a wood structure wall and then not only does the firewood stay wet and begin to rot, so does the wood sheeting or siding on the wall.

Having a lean-to roof off that wall would be a great place to store your wood.

It not a mistake I put the wood there, I had no place for it till I get more racks done . Half of first row is now under the rack I just got done. Most will be moved before to long.
Also all my wood is off the ground about 4 inches. Then when I get all my racks made all will be about 6-7 inches off the ground. When I add the lean to off my shop I am going out about 18' x 18 ' and will be about 9' tall along green shop down to about 6' tall on the west side.

Welcome to the forum tigeroak. Sounds and looks like you have some good plans. Also, nice supply of wood. Probably the only thing I would have done differently is to have the overhang on the rear a bit more to make sure water does not drip on the stacked wood. Still, nice work and good for you getting the low cost materials.

Nice inventory of firewood. You're a combination of Pallet Pete, Sav and some other guy who uses t-post for stacking!

Backwoods
The metal I used was left over tin that was 47 inches long, got a pile and every one is the same size. Cut offs on shed we added to store my antique furniture before I strip and refinish it. Have about 200 different items stuck in that building.

Welcome to the site tigeroak. Good see your planning and staying ahead of the game! One thing I would mention is for anybody getting wood from a municipality is be careful of nails, staples etc.... they play heck on saws!

I always have 3-4 chains ready. I have hit wire before and nails, not very often.
